Shamanic Trance Dance
An ancient ritual tradition used by indigenous cultures as a means of opening up and accessing inner wisdom. Before entering the journey the participant formulates an intention? What do I wish to gain from this experience, what would I like to resolve? Trusting that the intuitive, subconscious, collective mind knows allows the body to offer its own felt response free of conditioned pattern based responses. Blindfolded the mover is guided by the drum and other instruments in to a place of deep trance, moving from a place of thinking in to a place of being. This amorphous space offers the potential for perspectives to change and horizons to expand.
This 10 minute documentary piece explores one movers journey as he encounters himself through the dance.
Running time: 10 mins
Directed by: Nikki Simpson – Sound: Nicholas Twilley – Mover: Adam Barley
Gong Healing
Every organ, bone and cell in the body has a unique resonant frequency. Combined they make up a composite frequency akin to the instruments of an orchestra. When one organ in the body is out of tune it can affect the whole body. Through the principle of resonance it is possible to use sound to bring the body back in to harmony.
The sound waves of the healing gong support the recipient to break free of old patterns and re-generate and re-balance themselves. The resonance of the sound bypasses the mind and goes straight to the root of the issue.
This 15 minute presentation documents one movers journey as she responds to the gong and other traditional instruments.

Liminal Trance Dance – film footage
Liminal Trance Dance: Rushes from the shoot with Nick Twilley and Adam Barley. This short piece gives a flavour of the footage we are currently editing.
Liminal Trance Dance
A collaboration with musician Nick Twilley and movement practitioner Adam Barley – to document visually the process of the trance dance.
Trance Dance: An ancient healing tradition – the origins of which go back to the ritual dances found in shamanic cultures as a way to connect with spirit. The dance takes us naturally from a state of thinking to being. The rhythm of the drum guides the dancer to the healing place of deep trance.
Sound Healing
A collaboration with musician and sound healer Tim Wheater and movement practitioner Chloe Mercer – to document visually the sound healing process. The session involved a pre shoot diagnostic session whereby Chloe discussed with Tim what she was looking to focus on during the session. Tim then chose instruments accordingly. The session lasted for 40 minutes and was documented using stills. The audio track was also recorded and will be combined with the stills to form a final piece for presentation.
‘Movement is both a primal force and a nuanced expression of the inexpressible ’
Through movement and dance it is possible to come in to a more embodied state of being. From this liminal state of present awareness we can open to a deeper connection with ourselves. The potential exists therein for deep transformative change and healing to occur.
My current work forms a visual exploration of the journey that the mover takes to reach that state of embodied presence, the state itself and what then arises from this state…
